English Summary: Between the late 9th and the 11th centuries, the
Kingdom of Upper Burgundy, later the Kingdom of Arles, encompassed vast
territories in today's France and Switzerland. Although eclipsed in
historiography by the later Duchy of Burgundy, this earlier kingdom is
of great historical interest. Having never had "strong" rulers, it
conflicts with many established interpretations of medieval history. The
contributions in this book discuss the political, social, and religious
history of this kingdom and offer intriguing perspectives on the
