Bordering the Dolomites to the east, and Switzerland to the west, the
Stelvio National Park in the Ortler Alps is one of the most extensive
protected areas in the Alps. The unspoilt landscape ranges from valley
farmland and villages that have been occupied for centuries, forested
hillsides and alpine meadows, up to a wilderness of rugged glaciated
summits and ridges, the highest of which is Ortler, at 3905m. The 38
routes in this guide offer a wide variety of summertime day walks on
well-maintained and signed pathways that link a network of picturesque
villages and hospitable mountain refuges.
