The formless has fascinated artists in the Renaissance (from Leonardo da
Vinci to Pontorno, Rabelais, Teresa of Avila, and Montaigne) and in the
twentieth century, when Georges Bataille enshrined the notion of the
informe at the center of his aesthetic thought. This book tries to think
through the stakes entailed by this fascination and its resurgence.
