Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in Northern India, as it existed
in its rural state fifty years ago.
In a small village, the residents struggle with poverty while their
social status is defined by caste discrimination. Poverty dictates their
decisions. The lower castes and women are looked down upon. When Sarkar
archives a level of professional success beyond that of his Father, it
creates a difficult to navigate tension in their relationship. Sarkar's
best friend from childhood, Judhan, is also a major character in the
life of the village.
