In her fourth novel of the Kentucky frontier, Janice Holt Giles tells
the story of the Spanish Conspiracy, General James Wilkinson's 1783 plan
to detach Kentucky from the United States and make it the nucleus of a
Spanish empire in the West. Had it not been for the loyalty and
determination of men like Giles's fictional hero, Major Cassius
Cartwright, Wilkinson's attempt might have succeeded.
