There are relatively few places in the world where time seems to stand
still. Incremental changes have occurred on the Isles of Shoals, but
they remain hidden beneath the natural and historical beauty that has
been their hallmark since the late 1800s. Old Shoalers such as Uncle
Oscar Laighton and the famed poet, Celia Thaxter, would still recognize
the place today, from the grandeur of the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island
and the wilds of Duck Island, to the stoicism of duty-bound White Island
Lighthouse.
The Isles of Shoals Through Time is a visual journey to this offshore
haven, a reflection of summers past and a prediction of summers yet to
come. Stepping off the boat at Star, we wander past cottages and
monuments. On Appledore Island we witness the rugged, natural beauty
that attracted artists of all types. As we cruise through the islands as
the sun sets on the Maine and New Hampshire coastlines, we are reminded
why visitors return year after year to this timeless place.
