The Playmakers have brought fame and national publicity to the
university at Chapel Hill since their establishment by Frederick H. Koch
in 1918. In the first fifty years they have produced over a thousand
plays and have taken many on tour. Koch's encouragement of the folk play
has had a wide influence on the development of the American theater.
