Rapid prototyping (RP) is a technique of manufacturing parts by the
additive layer manufacturing technology; when a three-dimensional (3D)
model created in a computer aided design (CAD) system is sectioned into
2D profiles, which are further constructed layer by layer. This
technique has been used to build complex three dimensional models in
medicine since 1990's. Based on this principle, the common technologies
employed in dentistry are stereolithography (SLA), Inkjet-based system
(3D printing-3DP), and selective laser sintering (SLS). Rapid
prototyping technology is on its way replacing the traditional long step
procedures in prosthetic dentistry, specifically in maxillofacial
prosthesis fabrication, implant dentistry, eliminating dependency on
artistic skills of dentist and technician and also saves time.
