Lord Inverchapel was a key figure in British foreign policy and
diplomacy during Great Britain's twilight as a great power. His early
diplomatic service postings included Berlin, Washington, and the Middle
East, most notably as ambassador to Iraq. He served in China and the
Soviet Union during the Second World War and as ambassador to the US
after the war. He played a significant role in the founding of NATO and
the implementation of the Marshall Plan. This study is based on a close
examination of the huge Inverchapel archive, including a vast collection
of his private papers.
