Construction of a multidisciplinary conceptual framework of
environmental quality and quality of life is required to advance the
field of urban development, environmental quality and human well-being.
This document is a synthesis of environmental problems and issues
emerging out of the studies on various preeminent practices in urban
environmental management in cities. The document is cast in a
synthesized framework so that wider issues of urban environment can
become more discernible. The material also provides a broad framework on
environmental strategies and action plans based on well documented case
studies on best practices. The document has drawn conclusions that
capacity building strategies for urban environmental management has its
attributes related to (i) Strengthening urban governance (ii)
Integrating Environmental Planning and Management (iii) Evolving a Local
Area Development Agenda (iv) Awareness and involvement of Community.
Regulations, environmental programs and planning instruments could
provide guidance, legitimacy, and stable institutional condition to
ensure environmental integration in sustainable urban planning.
