A novel whose strong female protagonist starts life in poverty but manages to rise to better things. In rural mid Wales at the turn of the 20th century, despite setbacks she climbs the ladder to become Cook at stately home Gregynog Hall, a real achievement. Marriage and later widowhood see her succumb to the fate of many women at that time with little or no control over their own lives. Although she slides down into relative obscurity, she has the courage and determination to pick herself up and rebuild her life, living it to the full.
