The major poems take on the whole gamut of human experience, the underlying theme being, in Tolkien's words, "renewed shall be blade that was broken". The shorter pieces vary widely, some celebrating special occasions such as one for a walkers' Christmas dinner, another for a friend who died suddenly.Others are word portraits of particular experiences.
