Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the
study of the diseases and conditions affecting the supporting structures
of the teeth. These supporting tissues are termed as periodontium. They
include alveolar bone, gingiva, periodontal ligament and cementum.
Periodontology involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of
periodontal diseases and the placement of dental implants. Anatomically,
the gingivae are broadly categorized into three categories. These are
free gingiva, attached gingiva and interdental gingivap. Periodontal
therapy is broadly classified into 4 phases. These are disease control
phase, surgical phase, restorative phase and maintenance phase. Dental
implants are surgical fixtures which are placed on the jawbone. Over a
period of a few months, they are allowed to fuse with the bone. This
book studies, analyses and upholds the pillars of periodontology and its
utmost significance in modern times. It traces the progress of this
field and highlights some of its key concepts. This book attempts to
assist those with a goal of delving into the field of periodontology.
