In New World Empire, William H. Thornton offers an alternative road map
for America's relations with the Islamic world. He cogently argues that
neoglobalist policies adopted by the United States after 9/11 have
missed a priceless geocultural opportunity. With the White House rushing
to distinguish friend from foe and us from them, a huge part of the
Muslim world has been pushed into the 'them' camp. Meanwhile, America
itself has been redefined in stark contrast to this phantom adversary.
The resulting 'New World Empire' fails to recognize that jihadic
militants have their worst enemy in civil Islam. Thornton sets forth a
powerful case for salvaging this vital link between the United States
and the world it has lost. As the enemy of our enemy, civil Islam should
be our closest ally.
