The problem addressed was related to the preconceptional risk factors
influencing low birth weight with the objective of characterizing the
preconceptional risk factors that influenced low birth weight in the
Popular Council of Florencia in the period between April 2009 and April
2010. A descriptive observational study was conducted. The universe was
constituted by the total of pregnant women who were captured in the
aforementioned period and who had a newborn weighing less than 2500g,
that is, 28 postpartum women. An analysis was made of the risk factors
(variables) that had the greatest influence during this period and on
which we should concentrate our work with greater force in order to
diminish their influence on the appearance of low birth weight. Surveys
were conducted to collect information on obstetric data during prenatal
care, an interview to obtain information about the risk factors that
could act on the pregnant woman during the prenatal stage, observation
to perceive the biopsychosocial characteristics of the pregnant woman,
documentary analysis to substantiate the variables, and a study to
determine the risk factors of low birth weight.
