Chipping Woodford is a quintessential English market town, with its
charming high street shops, allotments, thriving church and pub. One
house - the Beeches - has been on the market for ages. No one seems to
want this huge, rambling Victorian mansion, but news comes that it's
been sold to a young widow from London.
Bex Millar and her children arrive in Chipping Woodford, hoping to
escape from their previous life, and from a past involving a tragic
incident with her stepdaughter. But it's hard to keep secrets in a small
town, especially when you employ a cleaner who loves to gossip and when
the formidable town councillor and arch busybody, Olivia Laithwaite, is
on your case.
Bex tries to integrate herself and her family in their new community.
She joins a pub quiz team and gets a job in the local bookshop. But when
the truth about her past finally emerges, it threatens to destroy her
dream of an idyllic life in sleepy middle England.
