Best known as the Titfield Thunderbolt, Lion is the only surviving
locomotive from the pioneering Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Built in
Leeds in 1838 by Todd, Kitson & Laird, Lion and her sisters were
constructed to two patents - those of Robert Stephenson (1834) and the
Liverpool & Manchester's own John Melling (1837).This book explores the
design of Lion, her nineteen year working life on the Liverpool &
Manchester, and her rescue and life in preservation, including her
numerous film roles.
