Estela leaves her mother back in the South to work at a family's home in
Santiago de Chile, where she stays for the next seven years, cleaning
the house and raising a little girl beset by anxiety, whose death we
know of at the beginning of the novel.
Like a Greek tragedy, the tension mounts on every page with each
character or element: the stray dog, the rats, "Sir's" unspeakable
confession, Carlos's arrival, the poison, the gun, even an outcome as
powerful as it was inevitable.
