Admired by the Ancients, the song of the nightingale challenged the poet to compete with it. This work describes the trajectory of this rivalry in the Ancient World and in the Renaissance, and then retraces the legend of the nightingale and the theme of the winged singer first in ancient poetry, and then French Renaissance poetry.
