There was a time when the world moved in rhythms. I was younger then
than I was now and filled with strange ideas. Some of them came out of
the ferment of a San Francisco summer and out of the minds and
interactions of a number of characters who became a part of my life. We
were people in transition calling ourselves bohemians or seekers and we
all brought our stories into a cauldron that bubbled with our losses and
desperate moments, our arts and ideas and intelligence, our hopes and
left-over dreams... Some of us had left jobs, some still held onto full-
time positions, many had unusual ways of making money, some were in
need - all were to the new edition... interesting human beings and many
were trying to find some worthwhile way of being in the world... Out of
this cauldron came my inspiration for a short booklet for one particular
person who was just beginning to walk her lifeʼs journey and, after
jotting a few ideas down, I also realized it might be of interest to
others. In a flurry of necessity and creative desire a booklet was born
with some ideas that had to do with a sometimes frustrating endeavor in
most peopleʼs lives - going into the world of work, in other words,
trying to find a job... When I reread the booklet many years later, it
was readily apparent how much the world had changed (I had talked about
using a typewriter) but I found that the message and ideas still brought
out a positive view of the world, one that still had a potential for
action and personal fulfillment. As a result, I decided to republish it
with some room in the margins for new ideas and ways of achieving what I
had envisioned in the original; adding a few short years of time to that
and a host of technological achievements. We now find ourselves in the
throes of an information revolution, particularly in the way we
communicate and make connections with each other... But the world still
moves in rhythms. It still has to do with your inner hopes and dreams
and skills and knowledge and desire, all combining to make outer
connections with real people who also need you... Best wishes on your
journey...
