Originally published in 1896 and updated in 1934. The object of this
book is to assist the prospective dog owner in choosing their dog.
Firstly it points out the uses and peculiarities in the dispositions of
the different varieties of dogs, secondly, their respective properties;
thirdly, to give an approximate idea of the size of puppies at various
periods in their life; and lastly, to select from a litter those puppies
which are likely to mature into the best specimens. Detailed and
illustrated chapters provide much advice on some 100 breeds: Sporting
Dogs - Gundogs - Terriers - Non Sporting Dogs - Toy Dogs - Lesser Known
Foreign Breeds. The book is illustrated with typical specimens of nearly
all breeds. Many of the earliest dog books, particularly those dating
back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly
expensive. Home Farm Books are republishing many of these classic works
in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text
and artwork.
