Eveline Clausen, the troubled protagonist, is the daughter of a German
father and Jewish mother, who grows up during the ascension of Nazism.
An autobiographical character that loses her naivety, innocence, begins
to live avidly and intensely to dispel all the fears she's had since
childhood. The men that pass through her life are similar means to avoid
the hard reality of persecution and hunger, though they are also
deceived by this young woman.
