Eleven papers which were presented at an international symposium in
1996, held at the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome to commemorate the
centenary of Austrian excavations in Ephesus. The essays discuss the
origins of Christianity in the town, early Christian and Byzantine
sculpture, the wall painting in the churches of St Mary and St John,
architectural details from other churches in the town, the temple of
Augustus, John Theologius, the late antique Kuretes Street, epigraphic
monuments and the medieval history of Ephesus. Essays in German and
