Revision with unchanged content. Disparities in the health of vulnerable
Hispanic populations require innovative approaches that are
culturally-appropriate. The use of promotores/as, who are community
health workers, unique to Hispanic populations is an innovative approach
that has the potential to deliver comprehensive diabetes self-management
education that is culturally-appropriate. This book will discuss a
randomized control trial of a promotora-led diabetes self-manage-ment
intervention for Mexican Americans, the largest subgroup of Hispanics in
the US. The methodology of the trial and the results will be discussed
in detail, as well as recommendations for future research. The target
groups for which this book is written include: nurses, physicians,
health educators, public health administrators and any other health care
providers, who work with vulnerable Hispanic populations.
