Children with communication disorders have deficits in their ability to
exchange information with others. A communication disorder may occur in
the realm of language, speech and/or hearing. Language difficulties
include spoken language, reading and/or writing difficulties. These
children get insulated from social situations that would facilitate
higher substance use.Children suffering from hearing impairment show
oral manifestation of hypoplastic teeth. Autistic child suffer from oral
habits such as bruxism, tongue thrusting. Most common oral manifestation
of child with Down syndrome includes fissured tongue, angular cheilitis,
delayed eruption of teeth, missing and malformed teeth, microdontia,
crowding, malocclusion, poor oral hygiene. A pediatric dentist should
not only be aware of the symptoms and problems associated with
communication impairment, particularly when it relates to orofacial and
dentofacial anomalies but also should know the appropriate dental
treatment plan and the required behaviour modification techniques.
