Can different Jewish and Christian texts, usually considered under the
heading of mysticism, really be understood as sub-cases of a general
religious phenomenon? The conference volume aims to document the state
of the debate on the concept of mysticism in various academic
disciplines (Jewish Studies, Classical Studies, Medieval Studies,
Theology) and to discuss the different interdisciplinary approaches. In
doing so, institutional, literary and traditional-historical Sitze im
Leben of mystical texts and text traditions from antiquity to the Middle
Ages and early modern times are explored.
