My Grandmother Shirley has always been much loved by our family. I
always knew her to be a poet and she'd have a tendency to create a rhyme
on the fly to describe in her unique way something of the current
circumstances. No major family event would go by without some poem being
invented or recited for the occasion. On the mantle of the fireplace
were some awards she won for poetry which I did not understand the
meaning of these trophies until working to compile this book and found a
newspaper article about Shirley being among the "Who's Who in Poetry."
According to the article by The Dickenson Star, she was included for
"outstanding achievement in poetry" for the poem Returning. She also
received the Golden Poet Award from World of Poetry in 1989. Indeed,
World of Poetry's fall newsletter for 1989 was found with the papers
used to compile this book.I am proud of the recognition she received and
I think it was well deserved recognition.
