The redevelopment of a site next to the Market Place in the centre of
Newbury, Berkshire uncovered the remarkably well-preserved remains of a
series of buildings arranged in recognisable burgage plots with
accompanying wells, pits, hearths and cellars. The booklet presents a
short history, based on archaeological and historical information, of
the structural, economic and social development of a block of land in
the heart of an historic market town from AD1086 to modern times.
Illustrated with period maps showing the development of properties and
burgage plots, early maps, and a range of archive and recent colour
photos.
